Independence and Wellbeing Centre

A space to be ourselves, have fun, share good humour, grow in confidence, access help and advice, and become part of a supportive group.

Run by a team of staff, placement students, and volunteers, our Independence and Wellbeing Centre brings brain injury survivors together in an understanding community that supports people to adapt to life after brain injury, develop and maintain skills, and forge new friendships.

Where and When…

Who is this service for?

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday:

Based in Llandough Hospital, our Independence and Wellbeing Centre is the hub for all our services. Here our members can find support and understanding, have the opportunity to learn or improve upon skills, and to socialise and share their similar experiences.

On Tuesdays this service is run from Trehafod Community Centre in RCT.

We are very grateful to Case Management Cymru for generously sponsoring our Tuesday Service.

Our service is for people who have a diagnosed acquired or traumatic brain injury.

Becoming a member of our Independence and Wellbeing Centre starts with filling out a Referral Form and having an assessment with one of our Information and Outreach Officers.

There is a charge for coming to the Independence and Wellbeing Centre that is often subsidised by Social or Health Services. If you choose to, members can alternatively fund this charge themselves. Our Information and Outreach Officers will be on hand to talk you through either method of payment and help you to organise the funding whichever you choose.

Our Activities

We get creative using a range of art techniques and projects in the centre. Sometimes we use art as a way of expressing our emotions and experiences. Other times, it is more about getting stuck in and making amazing creations, like throwing paint filled water balloons and watching them explode onto canvases!

Our partnership with @Nordoffrobins, the UK’s largest music therapy charity, means we are lucky enough to provide individual and group music sessions to promote speech stimulation and vocabulary recall, while easing stress and soothing our souls.

Our members use imagination and creativity to express their ideas in such an extraordinary way. Together we learn to share our perspectives, express our feelings, and find our voice. Check out some poems our Thursday members created below!

Our members often put on their chef hats and practise a bit of cooking!

Cooking and following recipes can help with lots of different skills such as memory, motor skills, planning, and concentration….. and bonus, it always tastes so good!

In addition to the social benefits of spending time with other brain injury survivors, our members can choose to join specific peer groups. These groups focus on topics such as chronic fatigue, memory difficulties, anxiety, mindfulness, relaxation, and many more. The groups are facilitated by our staff and placement students, designed to allow members to share their experiences and gain support and encouragement from their peers.

We love keeping things exciting for our members by offering an array of amazing day trips. Stay tuned with our social media platforms, as we go head-to-head at bowling, explore the breathtaking open-air museum at St Fagans, or cruise along picturesque canal boats. We’re all about variety and making sure our members have unforgettable experiences!
