Family and Carers

Our family, friends, and carers support group provides an opportunity for individuals to share their experiences and support one another in managing daily challenges.

Dealing with brain injury can be tough, and finding a support system that truly understands your struggles can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. You deserve a space where you can share your experiences, gain valuable insights, and find solace in the company of others who truly understand.

We recognise for some their personal and caring situation can make it difficult to access such opportunities. They have a need for flexible opportunities that can work around these, so we offer flexible opportunities to fit around their personal commitments.

Join our supportive family, friends, and carers support group, led by our Information & Outreach Officers. We meet on the last Wednesday of every month, providing a safe place where you can connect, share, and uplift each other.

If you would like to attend our social group, please get in touch or fill out a referral today, to speak with one of our Information & Outreach Officers.

We are very grateful that our Family and Friends Services are currently funded through Welsh Government Amser funding from C3SC and the Carers Trust. Amser supports unpaid carers living in Wales to access personalised, flexible and creative short breaks. It aims to provide breaks that improve carer resilience and wellbeing and to support the sustainability of the carer’s caring relationship.

What happens in our Family and Friends group?

Our Family and Friends project provides specific information to enable carers to understand and develop strategies to cope with the challenges of caring for someone with ABI.

We often have a guest speaker, from neuro-psychologists to other experts, they’ll shed light on the latest advancements and strategies to help you navigate your journey with confidence.

Our group also offers engaging sessions like tai chi, where you can relax, rejuvenate, and let go of your worries. It’s not just about support; it’s about finding joy and laughter along the way.

It all starts with filling out a Referral Form and having an assessment with one of our Information and Outreach Officers at Headway Cardiff and South East Wales.

Monthly meetings with others in similar situations enable carers to gain from peer support, socialise, and receive information to help them cope with, and sustain their caring situation, while maintaining their own wellbeing.

Our project provides the opportunity for leisure and entertainment time away from the home and the cared for person, with meals and trips out. Moments like these remind us of how incredible it feels to share experiences with others, whether it is a heartwarming theatre performance or immersing yourself in the tranquility of peaceful gardens.
